Scott Mitchell

This scholarship is in memory of Scott Mitchell. Scott began his collegiate life at NIU in August, 1982. He lived on the 8th floor in Grant South. Scott instantly loved college life and brought his energy and enthusiasm to everyone he met. He pledge a fraternity his freshman year, further expanding his group of great friends and social network. Little did he know at the time that he had laid a very significant stone in the path of his professional life when he joined the fraternity. Some of the deepest and most profound friendships of Scott’s life were established while at NIU. Additionally, just a few days after arriving at Northern, Scott met Kelli and married her six years later. They have two sons, Derek and Kevin.
Scott felt very well prepared for the professional world coming out of NIU and landed his first job just a couple of months after graduation. He remained at the job for a couple of years, during which time he also started graduate work towards his MBA at DePaul University. Scott’s next job was at Greenbrier & Russel, a software consulting firm whose original five principals were all from the same fraternity as Scott. Greenbrier & Russel hired many NIU graduates based on the strength of the computer science program and the caliber of student it produced. Scott ultimately made partner at the firm and it was perhaps the most formative time of his professional life.
Scott remained a proud NIU alumnus and a loyal Huskies fan to the end, returning for a football game every fall with the whole family decked out in Huskie red and black. He would have been absolutely over the moon about the Huskies’ Orange Bowl appearance. Scott could often be seen around town in Downers Grove, playing with his band, fishing or golfing, all the while sporting his favorite black NIU cap.
